SO TRUE. I had the luxury of being raised by a mom who wasn’t so obsessed with these traditional gender roles — I played with trucks, trains, and everything else that are generally called “boy toys” but I also had dolls, stuffed animals, and whatever else that are generally called “girl toys”. And I know for certain that this is how most kids would play if they weren’t constantly told that what they were doing was for the opposite sex and is wrong. What is wrong about playing with a toy? NOTHING. People are just so caught up in putting people into boxes for ‘male’ and ‘female’ that they don’t understand the whole ridiculousness of it.
For example, blue used to be for girls, and pink used to be for boys until the 1940s. Pink was considered related to red — a bold and more “masculine” color, while blue was considered to be related to the Virgin Mary and was more “delicate”. Now, it’s the complete opposite. Obviously these distinctions are based on no facts, simply interpretations, and are very fragile if they can be changed to mean the exact opposite.
Here’s a tip — don’t put your kid in a damn box. Let them explore. If they’re a girl, it’s really okay to let them go outside and get dirty (Personally, going outside was my favorite) and if they’re a boy, playing with dolls is not the end of the world — last time I checked, that kid might be a father someday, and as so, he should probably learn how to be gentle and nurturing too. We should encourage our kids to be whatever they want to be, and never put up any limitations for them just because of what is in between their legs.
